Supervision: Professional Practice Guidelines for Occupational Therapists
A4 27pp
Supervision: Professional Practice Guidelines has been developed to
provide ideas and strategies for professional practice supervision.
The material provided is supported by a comprehensive bibliography
and reference list. The term supervision is used to include
mentoring and support by one or more respected colleagues with the
aim of facilitating professional practice skills, attitudes and
behaviours in another/others. It may be provided formally or
informally, in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. Supervision is
viewed as dynamic and flexible, its nature and frequency being negotiated
between relevant people. The guidelines are not intended to be prescriptive
but to provide information to assist therapists and managers to make
informed decisions about supervision. Supervision is a shared
responsibility: employers are responsible for providing the
opportunity and resources for supervision and occupational therapists
are individually responsible for seeking and gaining professional
supervision irrespective of their position or years of experience. This
handbook is designed to be a useful and practical resource.

Watch Me, I Can Do It!
B5 127pp
Life can be very stressful for kids who have trouble coordinating
their physical movements. Everyday activities, such as catching a ball,
riding a bike and handwriting, become mammoth challenges. And, difficulty
in trying to keep up with peers, both in the playground and in the classroom,
can result in loss of self-esteem. Watch Me, I can Do It! explains the
problems these children can face - from being caught in a muddle
trying to coordinate several movements at once, to the concentration
difficulties these children often display; the stages of motor
skills development children should pass through; the factors that
influence coordination; and, perhaps most importantly,
how you can best support and encourage children to improve their
coordination. This book provides parents with loads of
activities they can do with their child at home. The games are
designed to help specific areas of a child’s motor development.
For a child, the parent can be the greatest teacher…especially when
learning is fun!First published in 1992 as Skipping not Tripping,
this book continues as a valuable guide to helping children develop
their coordination and confidence. Watch Me, I Can do It! is now fully
revised and includes a new chapter on improving the handwriting technique
of children who are experiencing difficulties. By Neralie Cocks.

The Handwriting Speed Test
A4 51pp
The Handwriting Speed Test (HST) is the only standardised,
norm-referenced test of handwriting speed. It was published in
1996 having been normed on 1292 NSW school tudents. The test
consists of a test manual, handwriting sample forms (separate for
primary and high schools) and a student information and record
form for completing demographic information and scoring and
interpretation details. The comprehensive test manual describes
test development, gives clear administration and scoring instructions
and detailed guidelines for interpretation including case examples. The
test is suitable for use with students from Years 3 to 12 and within the
context of a multifaceted assessment of handwriting. The HST has excellent
interrater reliability, intrarater reliability and very good test retest
reliability. There is a preliminary evidence for its construct validity.
Students copy the "quick brown fox…" sentence for three minutes, following
standardised administration instructions. Total letters per minute is
calculated using specified scoring criteria and then this score is compared
with the normative tables, to achieve a standard score with a mean of 10
and standard deviation of 3.The HST is an ideal adjunct to a comprehensive
handwriting evaluation. It is quick and easy to administer. It assists in
pinpointing the nature of handwriting difficulties, may be used for
evaluating intervention outcome and is proving useful when deciding when
to integrate keyboarding versus handwriting as a means of written
communication. The HST is an essential addition to any clinician or
researchers test library.
